Another Park Wildlife Update – A Visit from a Slow Worm!
Well well well… what have we come across in the wonderful wildlife area of the Welfare park A slow worm! 🐍
Despite their name, slow worms aren’t worms or snakes — they’re actually legless lizards! 🦎
You’ll often spot them in grassy or woodland areas, especially under logs or stones where it’s cool and damp.
One of their most fascinating tricks? If they’re grabbed by a predator, they can drop part of their tail to escape! The tail keeps wriggling to distract the predator, giving the slow worm time to slither away. The tail doesn’t grow back fully, but it’s a brilliant survival tactic.
They’re completely harmless to people and love munching on slugs, snails and insects — making them a real friend to the garden!
