AISinformationsupplements marineradar,whichcontinuestobetheprimarymethodofcollisionavoidanceforwater transport.Althoughtechnicallyandoperationallydistinct,theADS-Bsystemisanalogousto AIS and performs a similar function for aircraft.InformationprovidedbyAISequipment,suchasuniqueidentification,position,course,and speed,canbedisplayedonascreenoranelectronicchartdisplayandinformationsystem (ECDIS).AISisintendedtoassistavessel'swatchkeepingofficersandallowmaritime authoritiestotrackandmonitorvesselmovements.AISintegratesastandardizedVHF transceiverwithapositioningsystemsuchasaGlobalPositioningSystemreceiver,with otherelectronicnavigationsensors,suchasagyrocompassorrateofturnindicator.Vessels fittedwith AIStransceiverscanbetrackedby AISbasestationslocatedalongcoastlinesor, whenoutofrangeofterrestrialnetworks,throughagrowingnumberofsatellitesthatare fittedwithspecialAISreceiverswhicharecapableofdeconflictingalargenumberof signatures.
